Safe snail remedy?

Hello, I am the keeper of two Calif. Desert Torts. My Mom is having a large problem with snails in her garden, but I wont let her put any poison out because our torts have the run of the entire yard(including eating anything in the garden). So she found a product called Agricultural D.E.(Diatamatious Earth), it is supposed to NOT be a poison, but rather has something in it that cuts the snails so they bleed to death. Sounds kinda grusome! If anyone knows if this or anything else will kill the snails but not hurt our torts PLEASE help. Thanks!
