New Russian Questions?

Hi,
My wife and I are new owners of a russian tort and we have a lot to learn. I wish I would have found this site before we bought our tortoise from Petco, but our initial research did not give warnings about where to buy. My question is, is it imperative that we take him to the vet? He doesn't seem to have any problems with his eyes, nose, or mouth. He is very active (loves to climb) and has a healthy appetite. His deposits look normal to me, but I wouldn't know if they weren't. He discharged a white liquid once on the floor which I thought may be normal urine.?? We are currently bathing him everyday for 10-15 minutes. We are both graduate students, therefor low on income, but are willing to spend $ for a vet if it is advised. If it helps the petstore said they only had their russians for 2 days before we bought him.
I am also wondering if it is possible to overfeed a russian? He seems to eat an awful lot. One more - I have never actually witnessed him drink water, is this normal?
Thanks in advance for the input. This site has been wonderful for us beginner tortoise owners who truely do care.
Scott
