Russian Winters

I think Russians are great tortoises but most longterm breeders agree that they seem healthier and breed more naturally if you hibernate them. Hibernation always seems scary but after awhile you start to actually enjoy it...it gives you 3-5 months rest each year while they're off sleeping. If you live in a place with reasonably cold winters you can brave it and let them naturally hibernate outside (I haven't done this but know a lot of people who do) or hibernate them artificially in a refrigerator, which is what I choose to do and have had 100% success at for quite a few years now.
