My juvenile tortoises do not seem to mind traveling as much as my adult tortoises do.
You might not have huge problem since he is young.
If you are making short trips and have a large, secure enclosure, he will probably be fine on his own, especially if you have grazing trays going.
If you do take him, just remember not to let him free graze or free roam where you are traveling. You do not know the conditions of the environment - for example if vegetation has been sprayed or what some other camper has done before. I saw a guy drain the oil out of his jeep onto dirt in a national park...
