I have a russian tortoise (8 months old) named Boris. He is housed in a rubbermaid container with ESU lizard litter, spot light, and reptisun uv light. He's about the size of a silver dollar and has grown quite a bit since I got him, 7 months ago (then he was just a bit bigger than a quarter). Sorry about the measurements but I am never quite sure how to measure him.
He gets salad every other day. This has dandelion greens, mustard greens, collard greens, turnip greens, spaghetti squash, acorn squash, butternut squash, zucchini squash, and carrots. Obviously this is not all at once, but a there are a few types of greens, some squash and carrots in every batch. Sometimes he gets a treat of red-leaf lettuce and, when I can get it, opuntia cactus. In warm weather he grazes on trays of grass and clover I grow for him. Boris is soaked two or three times a week and has a shallow tray of water in his enclosure (plant saucer filled with large aquarium stones).
Now that the rain has almost stopped I am going to get him a baby swimming pool so he can be housed outdoors. This I am planning on covering with chicken wire to prevent cats from getting him. I know they need to be housed in open containers; will this be okay? There are many cats around here that would love a little tortoise for a snack.
Thanks for your response. He is my first tortoise (I have lizards and a boa) and he is so tiny; I worry about everything!
