I never recommend the use of sand as a substrate for sulcatas. I have received correspondence from people who have lost their tortoises from impactions because they were kept on sand. In captivity they are unable to nest in sand (becoming egg bound) or dig burrows because sand is too unstable. African spurred tortoises are not found in sandy desert areas of Africa
