Tort, Yes your points are well taken. However, the spiders are here now. Do those who are not prepared and inexperienced expect the tortoise to go inot a self imposed cryogenic state while they undergo their learning curve trying to figure out which end is up. Especially with fresh imports, arriving typically dehydrated, malnourished, stressed out, overparasitised some to a point with internal lower GI lesions. Experience needed immediately.
As for pet trade population and species decimation, of course, look at what morons like Great Lakes are still pulling off. While that may have been vogue in the 70's do you think the spotted turtle populations can take this level of collecting? As far as spides and the Asian species go down a few lines and look at the dialogue between Matt J and myself on the same topic.
My point is merely that Pyxidea do not make good candidates for those not extremely experienced. No doubt I, in my humble opinion, believe that every Madagascarine tortoise is better in Europe or here in captivity in viable breeding groups awaiting for the time when our morals can include a component for nature to exist unmolested. That is clearly not the case in Madagascar or anywhere in Asia. Not likely for some time. The responsibility for species survival may well fall onto the shoulders of herpers to keep these guys alive until that day approaches.
If one feels they have the experience to provide the necessary husbandry to the Pyxis genus, go ahead but a bunch, remember it takes more than a pair to get breeding.
