I have heard a lot of different reasons for the cause of pyramiding in tort shells.
To distill it down, it is caused by an excess of protien and possible too much calcium in the torts diet.
In captivity, people who do not understand the needs and proper nutrition requirements of a tortoise, more likel;y than not will end up with pyramiding.
I have seen some torts that were fed a diet of puppy chow by uninformed people and the result was very heavy pyramiding and a much shorter life span for the tortoise.
Also in the wild, tortoises especially leopards have been observed eating the feces from hyenas which is very high in calcium and undigested animal protien.
So that is why when you get a tort that already has pyramiding, by giving it the correct diet, you can see the tortoise resuming normal growth.
