Hi, as far as being abrasive, it's rubbing
on his legs and shell just from walking on
it and being in it. Walnut shell is not
toxic at all, but if your tortoise eats some,
either tasting it or if food mixes in with it,
unless you feed in a seperate place, there is
a chance it will impact him, and certainly can't
be good for the digestive system. There are
several substrates that make this claim, yet
are not recommended despite their statements.
Another thing with walnut shell is that it has
a lot of give and there's no good traction on
it for bone/muscle development. He's always
sinking/swimming through it, you know what I
mean.
If it was my animal I would not take this chance
on the walnut shells, even though I think it is
very pretty, has no/pleasant if any odor, and
cleans up well. This is one of those, better
safe than sorry situations. If any substrate is
ingested by a tortoise, even those that I
discourage, whether they have a claim to digestibility
or not, this one is the worst I can imagine other
than corn cob bedding. Also I suggest putting a few
pieces down on a linoleum floor and walking on
it barefoot! Oh man! ouch! niki
