while cypress seems to be one of the best substrates for tegus (and other animals, and also good in gardening), i'm trying to shy people away from it. while doing research for a school project, i came across several articles on the damage caused by the demand for cypress mulch. in order to get it, entire cypress forests are clear cut and shredded up. these trees take many years to mature, and are essential to the ecosystem here in florida. i understand that most people probably wont change their habits, but maybe a few. i dont mean to stir up the hornets nest, but maybe some people are unaware of the destruction (call me a tree-huggin hippy if you will)
