Sometimes the reason they are easy to handle at the pet shop is because they are so scared, stressed out, or just in bad mental shape. Like when mine can't hide for awhile they go into "house seeking mode" they seem to be almost oblivious to everything else, they won't even eat! Mine both got a security issue: they need to know where to go to hide and can't stand to be bothered in that hiding spot. I can pick them up without any fuss if they're out in the open but if they're even sitting under a branch I'm not even spoused to pet them. Maybe it's that they feel cornered when they're "taking cover". Now I just let them have their personal space when they think they're hidden, when they come out in the open to bask they're all mine. I'd hate to have them bite me now that they're bigger. If they try to walk away from me when I go to get them out I put my hand in front of them then pick them up when they walk over it. All in all they're really nice lizards they just got their quirks.
