The tree I posted does not seem to appear properly. So I have provided a link to a post in sci.bio.herp of a slightly different, but more detailed, tree. Hopefully it will work this time. Also, on second thought, Gonyosoma may well be a primitive ratsnake or possibly an intermediate between the racer and ratsnake groups, which are closely related to each other, more closely than, say, either group is to the garter snakes. It is also noteworthy that the green ratsnake, a species which diverged quite early from the other N. American ratsnakes, is similar in behavior to a racer according to those who have seen it in the wild. Note also the position of Gonyosoma in this revised tree, which could be interpreted as evidence that Gonysoma is intermediate between the racers and the ratsnakes.
