I'm glad you took this one! Surely I could have added some points, but you said it pretty clearly.
Although we argue about the definition, species are real. Not only systematists, but even people in isolated areas of the world know what animals are the same from their area.
No matter what characters one prefers to use (morphology, molecular genetics, behavior, etc.) to define species, it sure is interesting just how close the evolutionary trees are to one another supporting close relationships.
Did we open up a can of worms here?! I love it.
