I think you are getting the two terms above a little mixed up in that you think they are mutually exclusive. An animal can be both Monophyletic and Paraphyletic. I wonder if you are getting caught up in POLYPHYLY. Now therte's a great word if you get caught with 3 Y's in Scrabble. The question is, can a species be polyphyletic? There is quite a bit of conjecture on that question. I'm not going to go into it tonight - I'm bushed and off to bed.
