Horn tailed snake?

My uncle said he had seen an a snake that appeared to have a horn like tail. He lives in a Nevada desert.
The live one he had seen had a head that tappered to much more of a point than a rattlesnake; also it was not much wider that the body. The body was gray with alternating brown diamond then a stripe down its back. He also seen a shed skin that had the same hard tipped tail. Both were about 20 inches long.

If you can identify such a creature it would be nice to note.
