I recently posted a true story in the Herp Humor forum on how I found a baby Kingsnake lost in my basement. It is titled "How I found a baby Kingsnake lost in my basement.... or how I saved both my marriage and my snake collection"

I've heard other ideas since, including putting down duct tape, sticky side up to snag them, or putting talcum powder on the floor to track them.
