Unusual problem with spiny softshell turtle

This is an unusual problem that is difficult to describe, but here goes...Our turtle appears to have a claw that is trying to emerge from under the skin on his left
hind foot. He is in pain when you touch it and it doesnt look like he has been eating, either.
Is this as unusual as we think? And how do we go about treating this problem (preferably without spending $600 at a vet.
Thanks! We love our turtle and will greatly appreciate any advice we get.
