Breeding Red Eared Sliders

I am brand new to breeding slider turtles. I got interested when I found my turtles mating and a while later I had about a dozen eggs. Is there anything I should worry about? One book I read said I should keep the sexes apart, hibernate them, then let them mate. Is this really necessary?
