taming a california kingsnake

i have a problem with my california kingsnake. it is 18in. long, as thick as my pinky finger, and it bites. This is nothing like mexican black king snakes, so i am wondering if i did something wrong or what?
so can any one help me to teach me how to tame my snake? thanks.
