The talk will be about the giant softshell turtles of Asia, and in particular the species Rafetus swinhoei. This may be the largest of the freshwater turtles of the world -- it reaches over 300 pounds -- and may also be the rarest. There are only two in western museums, one in London and one in Vienna, and both date from 100 years ago or more. There is only one in captivity, in the Shanghai Zoo, and one (or possibly more) live one(s) in Hoan Kiem Lake in downtown Hanoi.
