What kind of filter is best indoors?

Can I use my big black outdoor pond bio-filter indoors or will it get stinky? If that's not the way to go, what would work best? When people set up smaller aquariums as filters are they basically building the same thing as the big black box pond filters with the sponges and plastic bits for bacteria, like mine?
