He looks to me as till class as a hatchling so and not even three months old. If you caught him he may have spent the winter in the egg and came out during spring. He should be fine in the wild I think you should like nature be and release it now the time in captivty shouldn't really matter only having bigger wold make him have less predators feeding him live food so he nows what his doing.
