Also, would a common snapper adapt well to a large backyard pond in Ohio? >>> Yes, but...you could (possibly) run into problems if it's the Florida subspecies.

What about if it spent its first few years as a captive pet kept inside during the winters? >>> No problem.

Would it do OK with the trasition? >>> Yes, as long as the animal has enough energy stores going into winter and as long as the hibernaculum is suitable (ie., it doesn't freeze solid).
