I’d bet everyone who keeps them will agree that Eryx johnii are the most docile of the sand boas – almost as dorky as rosy boas. And the babies are BIG (25-30 grams), so you can handle them easily from birth. I’m sure there are exceptions, but I’ve yet to find one with a snappy temperament.
All bets are off, however, for the two or three months after a female has given birth and is in rebuild-the-fat-stores mode. Any hint of food then provokes wild open-mouthed thrashing. If her own tail bumps against her body during this flailing about, she’ll strike at it. It’s funny to watch, but it’s one time I usually wear a glove to pick up a sand boa.
