:) to Arizona Black Rattlesnakes not Blacktail Rattlesnakes. Arizona Black Rattlesnakes are a montane snake with an active season from about April to September depending upon the elevation. Near Prescott I have been going to a den site at 7,000 ft plus where I find the snakes at the den site ALL year, males and females. The nights are still cold and the day temps rarely get above 80. I do believe that inbreeding occurs there; father to daughter and father to numerous other generations of daughters; also siblings. Arizona Blacks tend to have smaller #s at their den sites compared to lower desert snakes like wdbs that can have large #s and can venture 3-5 miles away during the summer.
I can't remeber the guy's name but he came to our Arizona Herpetological Assoc (AHA) mtg in either '96 or '97 and had been doing a study on Blacktail Rattlesnakes near Portal, Arizona. After inserting transmitters in the Blacktails over a period of I believe 10 years he found:

* They had a small range of about 1/4-1/2 mile area
* This population pocket did not meet another
* The females gave live birth in the same place (rock/log etc..) every other year
* They used the same ambush locations every year
* The females "protected" their neonates until after the first shed

Also, the Blacktails are green around the Prescott are, yellow near Tucson, and brown near Morenci/Duncan. All the same snake, but different color variations, IMO due to inbreeding. Pyros in certain areas around Prescott display the white crossovers that are not usually found in other areas, IMO due to inbreeding.

Here is pic of a wild-caught from Prescott that has the crossovers. In the area that it came from it is common. But other areas in Arizona, it is not common.
