I've heard both males and females vocalize. Since you just got him recently, he might be advertising his arrival on the scene, in case there are some girls hiding in the shadows. Even though he might not see any, nor hear nor smell any girls, it's always a good idea to advertise your presence. It's like you standing on the sidewalk and shouting to all the girls in the neighbourhood to let them know you're around, come on over for a party. :)))
