Well individual size is always varied no matter what the species (standard bell curve). However you can’t pin the differences on just genetics as environmental conditions can be just as important (i.e. diet, temps, etc). Also we have no idea how many imports contributed to the gene pool (would love to see records on exactly what was brought in and from where). So genetic diversity may be small in this area. Based on what I have seen over the years I am still going to say the immediate cause is diet. Although I am not saying to rule genes completely out, just give them a smaller role. Anyway just my opinion, this is a really interesting topic and something I have thought about and should be explored further.
