I use peat moss for a substrate. A hide box would be nice, but many crested geckos sleep in the leaves. I never see my male on the ground, but my female always sleeps there. I have personally never seen them drink standing water, but as soon as i mist them at night, they start lapping it off the side and the artifiacial leaves. Hope this helps
