My 55 gallon tank has never had a complete water change. I use a Fluval 304 external filter. I have had it set up for about 2 years with a pair of male RES (about 4 inches long each), and the water has been crystal clear with no ammonia or nitrate build-up. I also have some fish and ghost shrimp in there that keep the algae down to a minimum.
