I've heard many good things about canister filters, but they're also pricey. I was struggling between getting a fluval 3 plus or a Aquaclear 300 for a while. Went with the latter because many good things have been said about it and much much cheaper and more powerful than a similarly priced internal filter (such as fluval 3 plus). The only minus is that the water fall splatters water everywhere and is very noisy. I hang a CD jewel case cover in front of the waterfall to quiet it down. But doing that also reduces the filtering power, so I would run the filter at full blast (300 gph) without the cover for 30 min every day (when the turts are enjoying their dinner elsewhere) to let it clean the water. I like it very much so far, and the tank water doesn't smell at all (it's been 3 weeks now). When I graduate to bigger tanks, I'll definitely consider canister filters though. :-)
