I would have to suggest printing out some of the threads on shell rot, the difficulty of treatment, the cost, and the cause of it.

Having it in a bowl is a bad idea. It drinks and pisses in that water. The water will evaporate away, leaving a higher and higher concentration of toxins for it to drink. This is a very stupid idea of hers to do.

Also print out a general "how to" care for a RES or something like that. If she doesn't take care of the turtle, she will only have big vet bills in the future that will be far more than the cost of proper equipment.

I have 3 turtles, all about 3" long. Due to the information I have learned here and other places on the web, I have not had the first incident of sickness, shell rot, soft shell or anything like that. My turtles (my first turtles I've ever had) are perfectly helathy and happy...and VERY active.
