: : Dr. Turtle has anitbiotics in it. And like all anitbiotics, they kill bacteria, but not all of it. By using any anitbiotic reguarly (like anitbiotic soap) you kill off only the weak bacteria, but not the strong ones, so in a sense you are helping to create a super strong anitbiotic resisant bacteria. It also kill the good bacteria as well.
: : Another reason you shouldn't give it to your turtle every week is because it is medicine. YOu wouldn't give your child cold medicine every week just as a prevenitive would you? YOu don't want to give anyone or anything unnecessary medication. I would stop using the turtle blocks as soon as possible. The only time I used one was when I thought my turtle was getting a respiritory infection, but even then it is best to go to the vet and see what he/she thinks before you medicate your turtle.
: : I am not sure about the fugus thing, but salt does work. Try treating the water with salt (not too much, maybe just a tea spoon of aquarium salt for every five gallons), but if that doesn't work, I would scrub down your tank. What kind of filter do you have? Most canister filters that I have seen are for salt and fresh water so it shouldn't matter, but a little bit of salt (like a teaspoon for every five gallons) won't hurt anything....just don't use it if you have musk turtles. Musk turtles are very sensitive to salt. I have made that mistake and learned the hard way. Good luck. I hope this helps!! :)

: : : Hi all,
: : : Jake wrote the following to one of my queries
: : : "Dr. Turtle is harmful when used for no reason. it encourages the proliferation of "supergerms" and kills beneficial bacteria. this can lead to yeast infections, bacterial infections that cannot be treated, and other health problems. sulpha drugs should never be used long term, but just to treat an existing infection."
: : : Now you got me worried. I use one Dr. Turtle every week and the reason i started using it is because i started noticing some white filmy layers being formed in the suction rubbers of my filters. These looked like some fungus. This growth has stopped since i started using Dr. Turtle. I have not noticed anything on my turtle.
: : : Zoomed website said that Dr. turtle helps to prevent common bacterial and fungal diseases of water turtles. So as a preventive measure i started using Dr. Turtle every week.
: : : What do you suggest i do to avoid this fungal (or whatever it is) growth without using Dr. Turtle. Does the use of salt in the water help ? i have read that somewhere. What do you use normally ? I have concerns about using slat like that it will affect the performance of the filters. i feel like it might clog the pores of the ceramic rings.
: : : Thanks for your valuable thoughts.
