I'd compare them to a cornsnake in that regard. Offer them climbing branches and they'll use them, but they'll still spend the majority of time on the ground. Even more so that a cornsnake I think.
I did find some of the babies curled up in the recessed area underneat the lid-tabs on the shoe boxes I kept them in. That was also rare.
