There is a TV show on Animal Planet every once in a while called "Seven Deadly Strikes" or something like that. A biologist named Austin (first name, forgot the last name) travels across souther Africa to show us his selection of the seven deadliest snakes in the region. In the process he gets tagged by a couple of them, including a snouted cobra.

He does capture a boomslang, and he comes pretty close to free handling it. Compared to some of the other snakes, especially the cobra and mamba, the boomslang is downright placid, and doesn't seem threatening. If that is any indication, I can see why people could have thought the boomslang wasn't a dangerous snake.

By the way, on that show, the biologist also claims boomslang venom is the most toxic in the world.
