I keep my black rats without supplemental heating. The ambient room temperature is about 75'F. I do use a flourescent light on a twelve-hour per day timer. Even so, they'll often spend hours at a stretch soaking/cooling on their water-pail.
The year that I decided not to breed them, I kept them in a different room, where the temp is about 68'F, and no supplemental lighting.
