In Reply to: Yellow Rat Snakes for beginners...? posted by Alan on March 27, 2002 at 19:44:59:
I've been studying, rescuing, and re-locating yellow rat snakes for many years. My first impressions were that they were very ill-tempered snakes, but after years of dealing with lots of individuals, I've noticed that, in a lot of cases, it depends on the way you handle them.
If you show fear, make sudden movements, or do something that makes them nervous, etc, they're going to strike over and over again.
Captive born specimans are probably going to be pretty tame. I believe yellow rat snakes are a great beginner snake that has been under-appreciated in the herp world for too long.
These guys are gaining popularity and being bred regularly with everglades rat snakes, as well as other color morphs.
I remember my first yellow rat snake. It would eat tree frogs. I'd throw them in its cage, and he would catch them before they hit the cage bottom.
In rare cases, you may actually get to see the yellow rat snake hood up, similar to a cobra, but not quite as impressive.
Anyway, I believe that these are a very rewarding snakes to keep, which may actually turn out to be more hardy than other species.
: Am looking for info on Yellow rat snakes, and whether they are acceptable for a beginner....what their size max is and their temperament...
: Thanks for your replies....
