I have a 6'+ black rat in a large custom built cage.At first I had a big heat pad in one end of the cage, but he never went near it.I have since took the heat pad out and only use the clamp lamp with a 60 watt bulb that is placed about 20" over his hide box.In the morning before I go to work I put the light on and he is out within 5 minutes to bask for an hour or so on top the hide box, then he does a few laps around the cage before going back into hiding.I turn the light off at 9 P.M.Seems to work well for him at 82-85 degrees on the warm side and 70-75 degrees on the cool side of the cage.Point being,he now utilizes the intire cage.He is feeding and digesting well.
