DAILY MAIL (Hull, UK) 20 April 99 Snakes alive! Shock for couple after drawing back the curtains
A bleary-eyed couple got a shock when they opened their bedroom curtains - and saw a rat snake hanging from their gutter baring its fangs.
The three-and-a-half-foot snake was half in and half out of the gutter, having slithered up the 20ft drainpipe of their home in Cleethorpes, Lincs.
John and Valerie MacNaughton-Jones rang the police who despatched two firefighters and a snake expert in a bid to catch the slippery intruder.
The snake was eventually grabbed by firefighters wearing protective gloves and taken to a nearby reptile house.
John, 57, said: 'We actually spotted it the night before but thought it would be gone by morning.
'Then I opened the curtains and there it was in front of me, hanging down and hissing.
'We called the authorities and the next few hours were jolly good fun, trying to get it out of there.
'It was quite a climb for a snake and it wound itself around something in the pipe so it was hard to budge.
'I want to thank everyone for dealing with it so speedily. It will make a great story for the grandkids.'
A spokeswoman for Humberside Fire Brigade said: 'Our officers wore protective gloves and had to basically manhandle it into a box.
'They used a ladder to climb up to where the snake was hanging down and then grabbed it.'
'We were not sure whether the snake was poisonous and they had to be very careful, as well as making sure they didn't harm the creature.'
