...unless it's a rat snake that comes from desert climates, sand is probably not a good idea. I've personally used aspen, pine, bed-a-beast - practically everything except carefresh and newspaper, and I find that aspen beats everything else, hands down. Pine gave my boas a wheeze, bed-a-beast is dusty and sticks to snakes' mouths and nostrils.

: I was wondering what everyone uses for a substrate material. I have mostly used sand in the past but have recently been looking into trying out Calci Sand or something else that might be better. Has anyone ever had a case of sand irritaing their rat snakes skin? It has never caused a problem for me but have heard that it is possible.
