For a rat snake, 2 food items of the appropriate size should do it. Food items should be about as big around as the snake or a little but bigger. Look at the fattest part of the snake - the biggest food item the snake CAN eat is about half again that thick. As long as the food item is smaller than that you should be fine. Feed it 2 or three items, then feed it again after it defecates. A two foot snake will need to eat about every 5-7 days.
