For the record, "corn snake" began as an american term, "red rat snake" is still rather common in europe, as they don't mean the same thing we do when they say "corn". Originally the corn snake was called the Deer Snake (I have no real idea why) the "Elaphe" may be a part of that, as elaphe is a derivative of the latin for "graceful", the same root word that produced "elapid".
