Ok it doesn't say much about scale counts, but it does say that both species have divided anal plates and that Ratsnakes mid-dorsal scales (side to top or so) are weakly keeled. This means there is a very small ridge in the center of the scale. Racer scales are completely smooth. The real determining factor would be scale counts, but I can't seem to find any right now.

Interesting about the Copperhead problem. I have yet to see a wild Copperhead in VA. I have seen 2 Timber Rattlers, which are supposedly much rarer, go figure.
