When is a ratsnake a racer and vice versa?

Hi guys,

I'm confused here. Some herp books classify certain ratsnakes as racers e.g. elaphe radiata is known as radiated ratsnake and also copperhead racer. So, can racers be classified as ratsnakes or vice versa or have the definitions become muddled somewhat?

Perhaps those taxonomists among you might like to attempt an answer to this question. Thanks guys.
