fox snake behavior

Lately I've noticed that my two foxsnakes exhibit a jerking behavior at times, especially when sliding alongside one another. I'm assuming the jerking is mating behavior. They are about 1 1/2 years old, and I'm not certain of the sexes. Anyone know of reasons other than mating that may be behind the jerking movements? Also, my foxes are slate grey, and just beginning to show some red around the head and pinkish around the tail. All the pix I see of foxes are brownish red. Can I expect my snakes to turn brownish with age?
