In Reply to: Rat snake bound with eggs please help quick! posted by nikk on February 24, 2002 at 18:40:50:
: My rat snake is way overdue to lay her eggs. Her back end is huge, we put her into warm water and tried rubbing her but those did not help. We don't want to lose her. Can some on help?
Many times a snake will continue to look for a suitable place to lay is she cant find one. Do you have a laying box in with her?? Have you left her ALONE long enough to do it?? How long since her pre-laying shed??? Records are the upmost importance here. Usually a snake gets eggbound AFTER laying the majority of her clutch but could not push the rest out. An injection of Oxytocin usually relaxes the muscles and helps her get the last ones out. What the other person wrote about puncturing the last egg is a last resort. What kind of snake?? Have you bred her before?? Is it her first clutch?? All these factors are very important because you have less than 2 days before she'll get poisoned from toxic shock and be on her way out. If you can answer all these questions satisfactorally, call your vet and inform him/her that you NEED an EMERGENCY injection of oxytocin---if you wait to make an appointment it will be too late. Good luck,Jeff
