I don't have enough field experience to say for sure about the elevation/coloration idea. But I have noticed that the blackest snakes (on average) come from the eastern area of the US, from North Carolina up through Pennsylvania, New York, and on into Canada. While black ones can be found in the central/midwest area and along the western edge of e o o's range, most are not completely black. Of course there are exceptions, like someone mentioned below.
One day I hope to establish a photo page/pic collection of various black rats from different localities. I also hope to do the same with yellow, grey, Texas, etc. But for now my field experience is somewhat limited. :)) Sorry I couldnt answer your question with more information.
