I lived in KY for 26 years and caught probably 20 or so black rat snakes, especially from the eastern part of the state in the Red River Gorge area. E. obsoleta were probably the most common snake found while road cruising or flipping tin, copperheads were the nost common. Most of the black rats out there have very well defined patterns and are brown to almost reddish. The one or two I caught in the Louisville area were the same but not quite as good looking. I never caught a black colored black rat snake until I moved to Iowa.
