That sounds pretty bad. Where my parents live there is an abundance of underground rivers I think, so the water is really clean and doesn't smell or leave any kind of deposits on the sink. I guess they're lucky. I went to someones house once who had a well and the water there smelled awfull. Probably has a lot to do with geography I'm sure. Congradulations on your new house.

: City water does have chlorine, but that's an easy fix as far as fish are concerned. I don't know about flouride. My well water is very hard... lots of minerals... lots of white crusty gunk accumulates all over my tanks even though they are freshwater. And the minerals make it stink! Yuck! We've had it tested, and there are no beasties in the water that will make us sick, but it sure is gross to drink. I buy loads of bottled water every week. Anyway, due to the high pH (8.0) and hardness of my well water, I've been able to acclimate very few fish to those conditions. Before I moved to this well-water house, I could keep any type of fish, hence my excitement over city water, chemicals and all!

: : I thought that city water was much worse for your fish. Chlorine? Flouride? When I was younger I lived on a farm in the country with a well. I had several different aquarium setups with no problems at all. The well water tasted better than any city water I have ever drank, I might add. I knew someone who lost some very expensive Koi due to the city treating the water system without giving anyone any warning.

: : Oh, and the new house has regular ol' city water, so I can get back into fish keeping, hooray! I prefer freshwater, but haven't been able to keep any fish since I've been living at my current house with the yucky well water.
