In my experience, many snakes retain divided ventrals where the umbilicus was attached. I gave a lecture several years ago with a series of pictures of divided ventral scutes where the umbilicus attached in various ratsnakes.
: I have a blonde phase Suboc in my collection that was captive born and is now just over three years old. On his ventral surface, there are several areas were the belly scutes are divided. Try to visualize that area where the umbilicus is attached to the yolk sac in a neonate. This area usually disappears as a snake matures, but this guy has retained these ventral breaks. Like I said, there are several areas on his ventral surface where he has retained these breaks. Is this a defect caused by inbreeding or perhaps incorrect incubation temps? Needless to say, this guy is thriving and is otherwise an exceptional specimen. Has anyone else observed this?
