: : Are there any "real" differences between the two? Yes,the true rosies [e.g.r]from the lower keys ,florida, have little to none ventral[black checkerboard] pattern.hypo corns are just reduced pigmentation [washed out pattern],integrade rosies have this characteristic, there are alot of variences among locality rosy corns down here in south fl. to the keys, from my experience seeing them in the wild.Send me pics dorsal, lateral & ventral & I can tell you if you have a hypo or rosy[pics have to be good quality],also remember rosies colected in fl. below 7-mile bridge in the fl. keys are illegal.
Also, what about the genetics? Doesn't the hypo have a true genetic trait for it's condition, whereas the rosy doesn't have the recessive trait? I'm not sure. Will the rosy breed a hypo and produce all hypo looking babies? Another thing is that they are two different morphs. Although rosies aren't considered a subspecies any longer, I believe they're a slightly different snake and have some different morphological characteristics, IMO.
PS:) I didn't know they were protected.
